Rooted in ancient mythology, the festival primarily commemorates the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. To guide his path home, citizens lit thousands of clay oil lamps called diyas. During the festival, people thoroughly clean and decorate their homes with colorful Rangoli patterns (floor art made of colored powder, rice, or flowers) to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. Families gather to pray, share lavish feasts, exchange sweets, burst fireworks, and wear their finest clothes. It also marks the beginning of a financial new year for many Indian businesses.
